Frequently Asked Questions
Domain Rating (DR) is an Ahrefs metric that measures the strength of a website's backlink profile on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 100. A higher DR indicates more — and higher quality — referring domains. While DR is not a direct Google ranking factor, it strongly correlates with a site's ability to rank for competitive keywords.

The DR value comes directly from Ahrefs' index — the same dataset used by their paid product. Scores update as Ahrefs re-crawls the web, so values typically refresh every few days. Because the scale is logarithmic, moving from DR 70 to DR 80 is much harder than moving from DR 20 to DR 30.
There is no universal "good" DR — it depends on your niche. As a guide: 0–19 is low (new or small sites), 20–39 is developing, 40–59 is moderate authority, 60–79 is strong, and 80–100 is excellent (top global sites). Compare your DR to direct competitors rather than chasing an absolute number.
Earn high-quality backlinks from authoritative, topically relevant websites. Focus on: publishing original research and data-driven content, digital PR and HARO outreach, guest posting on respected publications, building linkable assets (tools, guides, statistics), and fixing broken backlinks. Quantity matters less than quality and topical relevance.
DR (Domain Rating) is Ahrefs' metric and focuses on the strength and quality of the backlink profile. DA (Domain Authority) is Moz's competing metric, which mixes backlinks with additional signals. Both run on a 0–100 logarithmic scale, but values are not directly comparable because they come from different indexes and algorithms.
A DR of 0 usually means Ahrefs has not yet detected dofollow backlinks pointing to your domain, or the domain is very new and not indexed yet. A sudden drop can result from lost backlinks, expired referring domains, or Ahrefs re-evaluating low-quality links. Check the exact domain you entered (with or without subdomain) and try again after a few days.
You can compare up to 10 domains in a single request. The tool ranks them by DR, highlights the leader, calculates the group average, and renders a visual chart so you can spot competitive gaps immediately.
