What is UTM Tracking?

UTM parameters (Urchin Tracking Module) are short text codes appended to a URL that tell analytics platforms — like Google Analytics 4 — exactly where your traffic comes from. When a visitor clicks your tagged link, the parameters are passed to your analytics tool, allowing you to measure which campaigns, channels, and pieces of content drive the most valuable traffic.

A UTM-tagged URL looks like this: https://example.com/page?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring-sale. There are five standard parameters: utm_source identifies the traffic origin (e.g. google, newsletter), utm_medium defines the channel (e.g. cpc, email), utm_campaign names the campaign, utm_term captures paid search keywords, and utm_content differentiates ad variations.

Without UTM tracking, analytics tools can only guess traffic sources using referrer headers — which are often missing, especially from email clients, mobile apps, and HTTPS-to-HTTP transitions. UTMs eliminate this ambiguity, giving you precise attribution data for every marketing dollar you spend.

When to Use the UTM Builder

Always tag these channels:

  • ✓ Email newsletters and drip campaigns
  • ✓ Paid search (Google Ads, Bing Ads)
  • ✓ Social media ads (Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok)
  • ✓ Affiliate and partner links
  • ✓ QR codes on print or offline materials
  • ✓ Banner and display advertising

UTM naming best practices:

  • ✓ Always use lowercase — UTMs are case-sensitive
  • ✓ Use hyphens instead of spaces: spring-sale not spring sale
  • ✓ Be consistent across teams — document your taxonomy
  • ✓ Never tag internal links — it overwrites the original source
  • ✓ Do not use UTMs on canonical URLs to avoid duplicate content
  • ✓ utm_term and utm_content are optional — use only when needed
